Croton-Harmon fourth graders discovered girls were given less challenging words to spell during a gender-separated spelling bee in Dame School during Colonial Day. CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Carrie E. Tompkins fourth graders got into character for the annual Colonial Day, donning clothing and headwear true to the American Colonists while rotating through different activities on Friday, Jan. 23. With help from parent volunteers, students grabbed a hammer and nail in the tinsmithing workshop, were scolded for spelling bee errors in Dame School and played and made their own Colonial games.
